Happy Halloween everybody! The hot weather has finally broken, the leaves are beginning to fall, and the litany of holiday festivities is about to begin! We’ve been in full speed preparing for special new beer releases and a NEW winter seasonal that will be released in November (more on that soon!) We are also coming up on a landmark anniversary for TrimTab – the one-year anniversary of The Happening! The Happening has become a fixture of our brewery, and has become emblematic of several tenants to our mission as a company. So, in preparation for this special event we wanted to help spread more insight about the event’s concept, what it represents to us, and a reflection of the past year of spectacular Happenings!

The Happening at TrimTab is not a new concept. In fact, happenings have existed for over 60 years in a variety of forms.  The origins of “happenings” began as early as 1952, by a prolific man named John Cage, in Western North Carolina – strangely enough where our founders Harris and Cheri originally lived. The weird parallels of the happening’s origins to TrimTab continue. Cage began the concept of “happenings” the same time that Buckminster Fuller – the pioneer of the trimtab concept – was teaching at this groundbreaking college.  Over the history of our company, both these figures – Buckminster Fuller and John Cage – have been huge sources of inspiration for us. So, it’s highly appropriate that they both converge with The Happening.

At its core, Happenings are about free-form participatory creative expression, where there is no separation between the audience and the performer. In fact, in its intended form, the audience itself IS a performer! As Cage pointed out, even if identical happenings were structured, there would be totally different results because of the individual contributions of those that attend the happening. So, by being at The Happening, you are shaping it in a new direction, simply by you being there.

But that requires participation. At TrimTab we offer a wide variety of interactive media. There are canvases for painting and opportunities to collaborate with other artistic media. There is a drum circle, where everyone is welcome to participate. Fire dancers express themselves through a variety of instruments. There are also silks hung from the ceiling and suspended hoops that allow for aerial arts. And though only trained aerial artists are invited to use the silks and hoops, we do offer training on Mondays at the brewery. There are bands in our production area, and a wide variety of DJ’s in the Tasting Gallery that allow a space to dance and let yourself be free. Each addition of The Happening has brought something different and exciting as the collaborative spirit has brought in participants throughout the southeast.

Our mission as a company is to create a world we love. To accomplish that we use craft beer to support the people, organizations, and ideas that are sources of large positive change – or as we call them, trimtabs. The Happening is such an icon for that mission and we have loved seeing so many people in our community using the event as a way to creatively express themselves. Over the last year we’ve seen people pick up hand drumming for the first time and losing themselves in rhythm. We’ve seen people’s faces light up in amazement as the aerial artists (one of which a retired performer from Cirque du Soleil) perform gravity-defying, body contorting dances 25 feet off the ground. We’ve seen fire dancers light up the night sky. We’ve seen new friends meet while dancing from one room to another. We’ve seen now hundreds of vendors take their crafts and showcase them to the world – many of them for the first time. We’ve seen a community come together and use whatever means was available to leave a creative mark on the world together.

To give you an idea of attending, from the perspective of a first-time Happener, here is a section of an article in Iron City Ink, written by Sydney Cromwell:

“Walking into The Happening, I felt out of place. I’m not artsy or acrobatic, and I had nothing to contribute to the collaboration.

I forgot that feeling a few steps through the door. Everyone there was in love with what they were doing, and they wanted to share it with me and as many people as possible. Even my camera, which makes most people nervous, didn’t faze anyone.

It was hard to feel like a stranger in a place with so much enthusiasm. There was no separation between the performers and the rest of us watching with our mouths hanging open. Since it started in October, The Happening seems to have found its groove and the night was unlike anything I’ve experienced in this city so far.

If this is the modern face of the circus, I’ll take the brewery over the big top any day.”

We’re so proud of our team member Lily Lanter, who brought forth this idea and has made the event her own. She has managed each Happening’s planning and execution and has done such a knockout job of keeping the inspiration fresh.

We’re also so proud our creative community who has greeted this concept so enthusiastically. At first people just came to observe. Now people are coming to contribute! If you haven’t been yet, we welcome you to come join on the 24th! It’s so much more than a party. It’s The Happening!

The expansion continues! Look at this BEAST!

We are about to grow the size of our brewery by more than double, which means a LOT more beer is going to be flowing! And yes that takes fermenters, staff, and raw materials – all items that get a lot more visibility and press. But it takes more than that. It takes a chiller. And not just any chiller folks. It takes a big, beast-mode, TANK of a chiller to get the job done! This bad boy will keep all the tanks chilled and the fermentations under control. Not a lot of people know how important temperature control is in the beer making process. But its a big deal. Huge. It makes the difference in a beer being clear or not, or having a variety of off flavors. Ever had a beer that tasted like bubblegum or bananas? And not in a good way? Thats probably a temperature control problem. At TTBC we’re committed to delivering clean, complex, and balanced beer. And this hoss makes it possible. We excited!

Things are about to get spicy at ‘Ole TrimTab!

We are beginning a weekly tradition during the Summer of having a delicious crawfish boil on Wednesdays. We are going to be opening up the production area of the brewery each time and rolling up our sleeves to get down on some mudbugs. Also, we are pleased to have our very own bluegrass extradorinaires, the TrimTab Players joining us. C’mon! Cold beer + crawfish + bluegrass + Summer + 400 of your best friends = one pretty awesome way to spend a Wednesday!

We literally can’t believe its almost been a year since our Grand Opening! And we can’t wait to celebrate with all of YOU!It both seems like it has gone by so fast, and at the same time it feels like its been an eternity. This has been an incredibly wild ride, and one that couldn’t have been possible had it not been for all of you, our supporters.

Your level of support has been overwhelming and incredibly inspiring to us. To celebrate our Birthday we have decided to throw down the gauntlet with some epically fun shenanigans.

Our anniversary will span Friday and Saturday, during both the day and night. We will be tapping very special releases such as our one-year aged Four Roses Barrel-Aged Olde Ale, the hilariously well-received Cinnamon Toast Crunch Olde Ale, Straight Berliner Weisse, a Sorachi Ace dry-hopped Wheat Ale, Bulleit Barrel-Aged Rye Brown, Several clutch casks, and another super limited release that we’ll fill you in on closer to time.

On the music end of things we will be showcasing a smorgasbord of some of our most beloved acts of the year. There will be DJs both nights and during Saturday afternoon from the likes of Coco, Sexpanther, and LeeJ. During both nights, while DJs hold down the fort in the Tasting Gallery, we will be transforming the Production Area of the brewery into a concert hall. We are going to be tricking our manufacturing facility with movable lights, fully controlled LEDs, high-powered lasers and fog. On gracing the stage will be the ineffable, the indescribable, the awe-striking STRING THEORY on Friday Night. And then on Friday the boom-boom of the Scalaci-Alley project will return, bringing you some bass heavy, tribal madness that you will not only hear – but feel.

Our dear friends at Cantina will also be joining us both Friday and Saturday night, to provide a plethora of tacos, nachos, and all the glory that street food was meant to represent.

All weekend is open to the public and cover-charge FREE!!! Since we are expecting a large crowd we do ask that if you bring your four-legged furry friends (i.e. your dogs) that you keep them on a leash.

This weekend is as much a celebration of you as it is us. We are sharing this together. We are incredibly joy-filled, and proud to have made it to this point, and we can’t wait to raise a glass, and blow out some candles TOGETHER!

RSVP with us on facebook!

That’s right folks! You heard it! Ice cold, TrimTab IPA is headed your way, in canned form, in just a few short months!

This has been a project we’ve been working on for honestly the past four months, but after solidifying financing, reaching a final can design (to be released in a few weeks!), and actually putting the purchase order in, we figured “hey, why not let everyone else share in the excitement?”

Our canning system is currently being fabricated in Colorado by Wild Goose Canning. And its going to be a beast. We are also going to be bringing a new, much larger glycol chiller, two new 60-bbl fermenters, an automatic depalletizer by Ska Fabricating, and a new filter to help bring our current facility into high gear!

To make this expansion possible we are having to do some pretty major retrofits around here, so don’t be surpised if you see some fun pieces of equipment around in the next few months. Boom lifts, lulls, and other assorted equipment that Will dreams about using on a daily basis.

This is a landmark expansion for our brewery, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Stay tuned, we’ll be keeping you all in the loop with new developments as we get closer to roll-out. GET EXCITED!

We are so proud to announce that our team is expanding by adding our first Finance Director! World, we’d like to introduce you to our newest member Matt Robbins.

At TrimTab Matt will be charged with basically keeping the wheels on the bus goin’ round and round. From everything from inventory to forecasting, he’s going to be our right-hand-man when it comes to the ‘ole number crunching.

Matt comes to our fold by the way of a more corporate background, which we don’t hold against him. Almost all of us have worked in a variety of jobs that in no way resemble a brewery. We’re pumped to bring him on and we’ll let him introduce himself to y’all through a short interview:

TTBC: So Matt, what are you most excited about with coming on board at TrimTab?

MR: I’m really excited about the people who are so invested in their craft and each other. The great beer is just a sweet bonus.

TTBC: If you were a hot dog, would you eat yourself?

MR: I would and I better win that eating contest for eating a 200 pound hot dog.

TTBC: What song should be played every time you walk in a room?

MR: It would be “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus and now that you mention it, please make this happen at the office.

TTBC: Miley Cyrus… ok. What’s your spirit animal?

MR: Definitely a lion.

So there you have it folks. World – Matt Robbins; Matt Robbins – World. Welcome to the team weirdo.
